Golden Dragon Acrobats

By Kris Thomason October 2, 2013

We saw the Golden Dragon Acrobats last year at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, as part of their annual Family Fun Series. We went with a preschool class and I brought my 4 and 5 year olds. I wasn't sure if the show would hold their short attention spans. Well, they loved it! The two of them were mesmerized by the amazing acts throughout the entire length of the show!

The Golden Dragon Acrobats combine acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music, and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty. This year marks the 35th year of continuous touring in the United States for the Golden Dragon Acrobats. The Golden Dragons have traveled around the world to all 50 states and to over 65 countries on five continents. The Golden Dragons remain the ONLY Chinese acrobatic company touring year-round in the United States.

The show is non-stop entertainment for all ages. The costumes are beautiful, no special effects needed. The show consists of real people and real entertainment. The performers are so athletic and graceful, they make the stunts look so easy. Yet they contort their bodies in positions that I didn't know existed, they support the weight of each other effortlessly, and they seem to break every law of gravity with their balance and coordination. They really are unbelievable.

There are balancing acts with parasols, balls, and glassware. They juggle. They stack themselves onto bicycles, while someone is riding! They jump and do flips through rings. The acts just follow each other, one after another, and there is never any lull time, it is non-stop!

The best part of the show, hands down, is the chair stacking trick. They stack chair on top of chair and perform balancing acts on the top of the stack. Just when your heart has started beating again and you think that's as high as they can get, they add another chair onto the top of the stack and balance on it. I think my heart stopped beating for that entire act. The only thing that stopped them from stacking higher was that they reached the theater ceiling!

The Golden Dragon Acrobats put on an unforgettable show for both kids and adults. The show is October 24 at 6:30pm at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa. Because of their generous local sponsors and community support, the non-profit Wells Fargo Center for the Arts can offer tickets for the low price of $16-$21! A steal for world-class entertainment!
